What does it mean to rebel? Sometimes it’s as simple as stepping onto the pitch.

As part of Rebel Moves, Bath Film Festival’s celebration of young people in sport who challenge expectations, join us for a special screening of Bend It Like Beckham alongside Local Lionesses, a short documentary following Bath City Women’s Team.

More than 20 years after its release, Bend It Like Beckham remains one of Britain’s best-loved coming-of-age films. Jess and Jules’ determination to play football on their own terms inspired a generation and helped change perceptions of the women’s game.

Paired with Local Lionesses, the story comes closer to home with this short documentary which follows Bath City Women’s Team, celebrating the commitment, friendships and determination that continue to drive women’s football at grassroots level.

Following the screenings, hear from members of Bath City Women’s Team as they discuss their experiences of the game today. From balancing work, study and training to the opportunities and challenges facing women’s football, the conversation will explore how much has changed since Bend It Like Beckham first reached our screens, and what still needs to change.

This event brings together a film that inspired a generation with the voices of players shaping the game today.

This event forms part of BFI’s Rip It Up season, celebrating the changing face of youth rebellion, culture and expression on screen across the UK.
