Bill Nighy and Annette Bening are magnificent in this true-to-life account of a couple who have come to the end of the road. Edward (Nighy) has had enough of his marriage to Grace (Bening) and has found someone else to love him. Their son Jamie (Josh O’Connor) is the only link between them, and he is roped in to try to persuade Grace to let Edward go. It’s an everyday story, which makes it all the more poignant and pertinent, especially in the hands of such excellent actors. Director William Nicholson (author of Shadowlands and Gladiator) has created a small gem.
