It’s hard enough being a stand-up comedian trying to make your way in Northern clubs in the 1970s. It’s a whole lot harder if you’re a woman. Maxine Peake, only ever known as Funny Cow, is a woman from a dysfunctional family (abusive father) who’s determined to make a go of it in front of unsympathetic punters (to put it politely) – using her background as source material. Costars Paddy Considine, Alun Armstrong and Stephen Graham all provide excellent support, but it is Maxine Peake who is the reason to see this film, with a blazing performance as a damaged woman trying to assert her individuality in an unforgiving man’s world.
