Inspired by a real-life programme that allows prisoners to tame and train wild mustangs, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s engrossing debut feature follows Roman (Matthias Schoenaerts – you’ll remember him from Far From The Madding Crowd), a convict in a rural Nevada prison who struggles to escape his violent past. After 12 years behind bars and myriad failed attempts to curb his temper, he takes part in the rehabilitation programme run by an elderly horse lover called Myles (Bruce Dern). For five weeks, Roman must train a wild mustang so the animal can be sold at auction. Described as “the most humane addition to the genre since The Shawshank Redemption” in the London Evening Standard, the Mustang won the 2015 Sundance Institute/NHK Award.
“Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directs a poetic and elemental film” that is “touching and unexpected.”
