Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia announced that a Saudi woman would no longer need the permission of her husband, father or male guardian to travel abroad. Iran hasn’t got there yet.
Afrooz, captain of the Iranian women’s futsal (a kind of five-a-side football) team, is at the airport about to fly to Kula Lumpur for the final of the Asian Nations cup, when she is told that she cannot leave the country without her ex-husband’s permission.
In the tradition of films like Offside and A Separation, this film illustrates the terrible injustice that Iranian women face, when the whole weight of the judicial system is one-sided.
Inspired by real events, Soheil Beirgahi’s film is compulsive viewing, as Afrooz – not always an easy person – confronts the implacable resistance of a man whose pride has been wounded, and has no compunction about his behaviour.
